If you’re nearing retirement or already enjoying it here in Kansas City, today’s topic is for you. We’re diving into how seniors can save on property taxes with Missouri’s new property tax freeze program. Rising costs are a big concern for retirees, but this program could offer some relief.

The Missouri Property Tax Freeze for Seniors is designed to lock in your property tax rate at its current amount. This means no more increases in your property taxes, helping you keep more money in your pocket during retirement.

To qualify for this program, you’ll need to meet a few requirements:

First, you must be eligible for Social Security retirement benefits, though you don’t need to be collecting them yet.

Second, You Must Own And Live In Your Primary Residence And Pay Property Taxes on it.

Lastly, this program is only for your primary home, so rental or second properties don’t count.

The original program had a home value limit, but that restriction has been removed. However, not all counties in Missouri are participating in the program, so it’s important to check with your local county government."

In the Kansas City area, here’s how the program is being implemented:

In Jackson County, applications are open until December 31, 2024, and there’s no need to reapply annually.

Platte County is accepting applications through May 15, 2025, with an annual window every October to December.

Cass County’s initial enrollment period has ended, but updates may be available by contacting the County Collector’s Office.

Clay County’s application period starts January 1st, 2025, and runs through March 31st. Annual renewals are required.

Clinton County is still finalizing its rollout, with more information expected in early 2025.

These differences between counties mean it’s important to stay informed and act quickly. If you’re unsure where to start, visit your county’s website or contact their clerk’s office for assistance. The article on our website includes a chart showing these differences.
